Merrimack New Hampshire Admiral Forrest Percival Sherman, USN (1896-1951)

Forrest P. Sherman, a native of Merrimack, New Hampshire

was born October 30, 1896 on Depot Street, in the Reeds Ferry section. He was the son of one of the headmasters at the McGaw Institute, and a  next-door neighbor to my grandparents.

He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for one year. Then he entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1914, graduating in 1917. During and shortly after World War I, he served in European waters as an officer of the gunboat Nashville and destroyer Murray.

A naval aviator from 1922, his peacetime service included aviation, surface, and staff assignments. He was captain of the aircraft carrier “Wasp” (CV-7) when it was sunk by three Japanese torpedo hits in the Solomon Islands September 25, 1942. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism in command of the carrier.

He was present at the signing of the Japanese surrender aboard the battleship Missouri. He served as Chief of Naval Operations from November 1949 until his death July 22, 1951in Naples, Italy, at the age of fifty-four, while on a military-diplomatic mission. He had been the youngest officer to hold that post.

The destroyer, “USS Forrest Sherman” (DD-931) was named in his honor and launched February 5, 1955.  Also, the USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) was named in his honor, and launched January 30, 2006. His daughter, Anne Sherman Fitzpatrick, broke the bottle of champagne across the bow to formally christen it, and gave the order to “man our ship and bring her to life,” at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Admiral Sherman’s framed photograph hangs in the original lobby of the present Middle School, formerly the high school, in Merrimack, NH.

He m1) Hannah –; he married 2nd) after 15 Apr 1758 to Mary Crary, dau of Benjamin and Deborah (Balcom) Crary. He served as a private in Capt Caleb Whitings Co. during the American Revolution and marched on the alarm of 19 Apr 1775 to Roxbury. “He removed to Lisbon NH [possibly about 1780/81 from Rhode Island, and lived on the farm now occupied by Hiram Aldrich on road 52. Mr. Sherman and four sons had lots of 100 acres given them as an inducement to settle. He was great-grandfather to Reuben Sherman now living on road 34. At that date the country was a wilderness, bears and other wild animals holding undisputed the territory. Reuben relates an incident in the life of his grandfather Sherman which is worth of preservation as a matter of history. About the year 1777 there was a great scarcity of provisions among the settlers. Then a lad of sixteen he traveled to Barnet, VT through the wilderness, and procured three pecks of flour, without the sign of a road or anything to guide him. When he arrived almost in sight of home, his dog met him and barked vigorously at some object in a tall pine, which he discovered to be a bear. Crying lustily, he heard himself heard by his mother, and ordered their family musket, which was without a lock, with ammunition and a fire-brand. The boy held the gun while his brother touched it off with the fire-brand and killed the bear. The body lodged in a fork of the tree, which obliged them to cut it down. The meat furnished by the bear was a God-send, and saved the family, with the flour which the boy had carried ten miles on his shoulder, from starvation. Mr.Sherman had seen service in the war of 1812,[rendering service at Lake Champlain and granted a pension] was fond of political discussion, in fact, any kind of discussion. He was never known to assent to the opinion of others, his standard remark being, “Well, I dunno, that is a question.” He was a regular attendant at religious services, and greatly prized his
position as teacher in Sunday school of a bible class of middle aged women. The members of his class used to say, “Mr. Sherman is a deep bible scholar,” but it never appeard
that he did anything except to talk platitudes and fire biblical conundrums at the
simple minded, but good, women.”  James C. Sherman lived in District #6. [From:”Some Things About Coventry-Benton, New Hampshire,” by William F. Whitcher, 1905] In 1840 and 1850 Stephen Sherman and family were living in Lyman, Grafton Co NH. By 1860 he was living in Benton NH.
