A 36-year-old Mary Harriett Day, also known as “Hattie” peers out at you from this
circa 1904 photograph. She was unmarried at the time the photograph was taken, and probably a school teacher in the Derry-Londonderry area. Within a year she would wed one of the local men, Benjamin Franklin Low, a prosperous businessman and farmer, with whom she would begin a family.
She had been born in Derry to a farming family. Her father, Charles H. Day was active in the town, often providing boards for building and repair, cut wood for fires, and in at least one case acted as auditor of the Library’s annual report in 1904.
She appears to have been strongly committed to local education. A few years after this photograph was taken, in 1908, she became either the first or one of the first female trustees of the Derry Public Library. She worked as a volunteer trustee, some years serving as treasurer, for an amazing fifty years. When she died in 1957, the board of trustees reported “suffered a grevious loss,” and offered a “In Memoriam” in the town report, along with a more aged, but still striking photograph of now Mrs. Harriet D. Low. [Note: she appears to have been active as trustee at both the Derry Public Library and the Taylor Library in E. Derry NH].
Though little could be found for a complete compilation of either the Day or the Low families in Derry, I have created a small genealogy about them, based on primary evidence.
