Cooper and Partner of Fessenden & Lowell Co: Anson Darwin Fessenden (1839-1907)

I recently wrote an article about Fessenden & Lowell Co., a cooperage in the village of Reeds Ferry, Merrimack, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.  One of the co-owners of this shop or factory was Anson Darwin Fessenden.

Unlike his partner, Levi Lowell, Anson did not move to New Hampshire, but preferred to remain in Townsend, Massachusetts.  From there he oversaw their interests which were many.

In this story, I will be focusing on the genealogy of the Fessenden family who were connected with the Fessenden & Lowell Co. of Merrimack New Hampshire.

  1. David Todd says:

On old Topo maps 1927 and 1949, on the B&M Railroad North Weare branch, a station called Fessenden is shown between East Weare and North Weare stations. I am told it must have been named for a family or industry that was located there. Does anyone know?Is it at all related to these Fessendens?

    • Janice Brown says:

David, thanks for reading my blog. This is the first I knew of a station called Fessenden in North Weare, however it is not totally a surprise. The story I wrote was mostly about Fessenden & Lowell’s presence in Reeds Ferry (Merrimack NH) so I did not go into the myriad of businesses they ran. One of their big needs was to get lumber to their shop and then back out for sale. I note that in the 1901 Concord City Directory, East Weare includes a manufacturer’s presence–B & A.D. Fessenden Co. (which existed at the same time as the partnership of Fessenden & Lowell, or Benjamin & Anson D. Fessenden Co. No doubt, as they did in Merrimack, they had their own depot stop at the factory or location of business. This is probably what the Fessenden Depot was, not for public use, but for company use. I hope this info helps you.
